The ideal situation when it comes to studying is to aim for ‘working smarter, not harder’. While this can be easier said than done, there are a number of methods that can be applied and tips that can be taken on board to assist with developing a student’s study skills.
One of the major things to consider is how long you actually study for as this can have a major impact on how effective your studying really is. The brain finds it difficult to process any new information after 90 minutes of studying. Studying in 30 minute blocks is much more effective.
Sleep patterns can also impact on how a person studies. A short nap can often refresh and recharge the brain. The recommended time for a good nap is between 20 and 30 minutes. If you nap for longer than 30 minutes, you are at risk of falling into REM sleep i.e. ‘deep sleep’ which will make you feel even more tired and groggy after you have woken up.
